DESIGN FLAWS are believed to be responsible for leaks in the six-year-old $4 million Burnside High School art and technology block. Similar leaks have also been found in the school administration buildings. They will be repaired as part of a $24 million repair and redevelopment work plan at the school, which is set to start this year. The cost of fixing the leaks is not yet known, but is expected to be assessed in the next few weeks. The building has been leaking for more than two years, but work to fix it was put on hold while the Ministry of Education assessed other earthquake repairs and redevelopment work at the school. Burnside principal Phil Holstein said the repair was initially not expected to be done until 2022.
It was brought forward to this year, as the school was worried damage would be done to the building if the leaks were not repaired, he said. He said the architectural design of the buildings was believed to be responsible for the leaks. “Across the country, a lot of school designs with this style of architecture, particularly flat roof buildings, a lot of them have weather tightness issues,” he said. Alongside the repair work, he said the school was set to be refurbished and modernised. “We want to provide the best learning environment we can for our students here, and that’s ultimately what we’re after,” he said. Bringing the work forward meant the school could start the master-planning process with the Ministry of Education soon, he said.

News No library bus for Merivale By Julia Evans THE MERIVALE Precinct Society is worried about the lack of facilities for its ageing population. So the residents’ group came up with a solution – to put the mobile library bus stop there again. Deputy chairwoman Denise Leighs approached the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, which raised the issue with the city council. However, the city council said Merivale does not meet the criteria to get the mobile library bus back anytime soon. “The mobile library idea

to stop in Merivale before the earthquakes outside the JDV cafe entrance on Aikmans Rd. But city council libraries and information manager Caroline Robertson said the city council would not be considering a stop
in Merivale. “Previously the mobile library did stop at Merivale but, at the time, the area did not have access to the same number of library facilities it does now,” Ms Robertson said. She said the city council is also mindful of the distance to the nearest library. Merivale Mall is 2.9km from the Papanui Library, 2.4km from the Peterborough Library and 3km from the Fendalton Library. Mrs Leighs will take the response back to the Merivale Precinct Society. The mobile library route has 23 stops, including various retirement villages around the city.

In Brief WOMAN HURT IN ROBBERY A woman was treated for minor injuries after she was robbed by a group of people in Upper Riccarton on Saturday. Police responded to a report of a woman having her phone taken on Hansons Lane at about 2.15am. She was treated at the scene by a St John ambulance. ROWER GETS FUNDING Tom Mackintosh was given $500 by the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board to go towards his trip to Bulgaria to compete in the 2017 World Rowing under-23 championships. The competition starts tomorrow and runs for four days. Mackintosh will be part of the men’s heavyweight eight-plus team. He was part of the unbeaten New Zealand under-21 rowing team in 2016.

Sandcastle on display IT HAS taken four artists, a week of work and 10 tonnes of sand. But shoppers at The Hub Hornby won’t be able to miss the extravagant sand sculpture in the middle of the mall. The brief was broad – a fantasy castle. So artists Asheley Elizabeth, Cynthia van de Loo, Helen Beswick and Annette Griffiths went
to work creating the masterpiece. Hornby Hub manager Jason Marsden said the mall had been doing this annually since 2012. “Always during the school holidays,” Mr Marsden said. He said there’s something special about capturing the imagination of children who can see the whole art process for a week and then the final product for another week.
But Ms Elizabeth said it wasn’t only children stopping to have a look as they worked. “It was people of all ages that were coming in and having a chat,” she said. The sandcastle will be in the mall until the end of the school holidays but Ms Elizabeth said she’d love it if the public wanted it there for as long as possible.

Halswell shelter recaptures past THE STORY of a women’s refuge has been captured in a Halswell shelter. Canterbury’s heritage has been reflected in a remembrance structure that recalls and tells the story of Mount Magdala, an 1880s women’s refuge and its historical farm buildings. Titled A Place to Shelter, the new structure in McMahon Reserve outlines the history of the area and incorporates repurposed heritage material from the original Mount Magdala farm. The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has been involved in the design options. “We are delighted a new remembrance structure now features in McMahon Reserve, incorporating heritage material from the original Mount Magdala farm. It brings history to life in the Aidanfield area,” Community Board chairman Mike Mora said. The shelter stands on the site of the farm that once provided all the food for Mount Magdala, and, later, St Joseph’s Orphanage. It presents a new chapter in

By Julia Evans THE COMMUNITY living alongside Christchurch Boys’ High School is worried about dangerous driving and pedestrian safety. Residents have expressed concerns to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board regarding commuters “rat running” and “speeding” through Harakeke St to avoid peak traffic delays in Riccarton. The Straven and Riccarton Rd intersection is particularly busy, residents told the board so to avoid traffic motorists are opting to use Harakeke St. The intersection at Straven Rd has the most significant safety issues for cyclists and Christchurch Boys’ High School hostel students who often use the intersection. Traffic calming measures, including speed bumps, have already been installed in Harakeke St but city council staff are now investigating to see if there are any other safety measure that can be implemented. A report will go back to the community board with findings by September.

Glimmer of hope for hall By Julia Evans THE YALDHURST Memorial Hall has been thrown a lifeline, with more consultation to be made before a decision is made on its future. But now it will take two community board’s to decide its fate. Last month, the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board decided to recommend to the city council that the plaques be removed and the earthquakedamaged building be demolished. But the community board made a U-turn on its recommendation, and asked that more Mike Mora consultation be carried out before a final decision is made, which councillors agreed to. Board chairman Mike Mora said he met with some residents following the board’s decision, who raised concerns with the consultation around the hall’s demolition. “There’s quite a lot of issues that came to light – a lot of the community were expecting

another round of consultation before this decision was made,” he said. in the February 22, 2011, earthquake forcing its closure. A city council report said it would cost $1.2 million to repair. Demolition was expected to cost between $50,000 and $75,000, it said. The report said the community was in favour of demolition, but wanted to retain a community building in the area, with further discussions to be had
around that. A seminar will be held between the two community boards to outline the current situation. The boards will then consider an agreed way forward including arrangements for further engagement with affected local community. A time frame is yet to be confirmed.

and respect the community, otherwise cops will come down hard and shut down their play area and if any one does do skids in stupid spots the boys will hit them up and told don’t be an idiot or you’ll ruin it for all of us. A NEW and modern teaching block is nearing completion at Villa Maria College. On July 25, the school is set to open its new classroom block, which offers a nod to the past. The college has named its new building Kia Toa, which was the name of the original late 1800s homestead the Sisters of Mercy purchased as part of the Peer St property in 1918. “We understand Kia Toa means to be brave and to store. Kia Toa expresses these ideas for the building as a place from which girls will set off, strongly
and bravely with their store of knowledge to take the story of Mercy with them,” principal Deborah Brosnahan said. Kia Toa will boast 17 large teaching spaces for technology learning, including food, textiles and digital as well as media studies, english, social sciences and religious education. The new building is part of the college’s 10-year modernisation programme. Next year marks Villa Maria’s centenary, with celebration planning already well under way.

Medbury pupils put big effort into fundraising Medbury School welcomed Harley Hamilton from World Vision to its assembly, to accept money raised for the 40 Hour Famine. Medbury raised $22,818.10, which was the second highest amount by a group in New Zealand, and collectively they walked more than 6000km.

CHICKEN BREAST WITH MUSHROOM STUFFING AND MARSALA GLAZE Ingredients 1 Garlic clove 1 Shallot, or small onion, diced 15g Butter 50g White Button mushrooms 2 slices Bread, stale and diced 1 Tbsp Parsley, finely chopped 1 Lemon, zest 2 Chicken breasts 1 Tbsp Oil 3 Tbsp Marsala, or sherry 2 Tbsp Cream Directions Stuffing In a small frying pan, fry the garlic and shallot in the butter until translucent. Add the mushrooms and fry for 2-3min until cooked. Add the breadcrumbs, cooking until the butter has been absorbed. Take off the heat, add the parsley and lemon zest and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. To cook the chicken Heat the oven to 180 deg C.

Dressing ½ cup Avocado oil ¼ cup Cider vinegar 1 tsp Sugar 1 tsp Mustard 1 tsp Salt 1 to taste Cracked black pepper Directions Stuff the chicken breast by lifting the tenderloin up (if there is no tenderloin, ignore this). Press half of the stuffing on to the breast meat. Cover the stuffing with the tenderloin. Wrap the breast with kitchen string to secure the stuffing in place and tie. Repeat with second breast. Heat a frying pan and add oil. Add the breasts skin side down and season with salt. When browned on one side, turn and season again. After 3min, place the pan in the hot oven for a further 10-12min or until cooked. Remove from the oven and cover with foil to rest for 5min. To serve, place the chicken on a chopping board and remove the string.
Slice in half and place on a warmed plate. Cover with foil while you make the sauce. Return the pan of chicken juices to the hob. Add the marsala or sherry and let it reduce for 2-3min (this is called de-glazing). Add the cream and taste for seasoning. Pour the sauce over the chicken. You may need to pour over through a sieve to remove any burnt pan leftovers. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve with potatoes and greens.
Thaw beans. Peel grey skin off beans. Wash snow peas and cut in half lengthways. Cut avocado in half, then remove stones and peel. Chop avocado roughly. Wash tomatoes and cut in half. Toss beans, snow peas, avocado and tomatoes with dressing. Dressing: Combine avocado oil, vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt and pepper.

1 pinch Salt 1 pinch Ground cinnamon ¼ cup Orange juice, use up to ½ cup Directions Nip any little loose ends from the yams. Boil or steam for 1015min or until cooked. Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Place the yams in a lightly buttered 28cm oval baking dish. Drain the apricots reserving the syrup. Place the apricots over the yams. Combine the sugar, cornflour, salt and cinnamon in a saucepan. Combine the syrup with enough orange juice to make ¾ of a cup. Stir into the sugar mixture and heat, stirring, until thickened. Pour over the apricots and yams. Bake for 20min, until sizzling and lightly browned.

By Andrew King VILLA MARIA College celebrated winning the year 10 title in the South Island junior netball tournament after beating Queenstown’s Wakatipu High 42-27 on Wednesday. However, due to appalling weather conditions, the final was transferred from the Christchurch Netball Centre to the St Margaret’s College gym. Unfortunately, they were unable to play most of the final games on Wednesday due to snow falling. Villa opened their account in the tournament with a 49-15 win over Gore’s St Peter’s College before beating Wakatipu 30-23 and Cashmere High 43-22. In the second day of competition, Villa beat Timaru Girls’ High 38-28 before losing to St Margaret’s 26-23. They bounced back to defeat Dunedin’s St Hilda’s Collegiate 37-25. The semi-finals were able to be played before the weather closed in with Villa beating Southland Girls’ High 25-9 to progress to the final. Tournament director Penny Martin said it was a great event that was unfortunately let down by the weather. “After two full days of playing their little hearts out, it was a shame to cancel those last

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. Anyone who believes they have a fungal infection of the nails is invited to make an appointment for a
consultation with Feet First so one of the qualified Podiatrists can assess if that is the case, and if so, will recommend the Clearanail procedure. This involves the initial treatment, and three follow-up appointments at monthly intervals to check progress. “Fungal nail infections won’t disappear immediately,” clinic director Charlotte Russell says, “so people need to commit to the process, which can take up to four months as the nail grows.”

Seal pup gets short shrift By Mark Thomas – specialist fire investigator IT WAS going to be the mother of all storms apparently. It turns out it wasn’t. At least not in the city. But it was bitterly cold, some snow fell and on the hills it managed to settle. I’m sure the weather did have some effect, however, with 16 motor accidents attended by our crews in the week. We did have the odd other call that could have been attributed to the weather. Although the incident attended by Harewood and Addington crews in Hornby last Friday had its origin in ignorance rather than iciness. A fire was lit in the fireplace by a shivering occupant. It’s just that this was a house damaged back in the earthquakes and the chimney had been removed. The result was quite fortunate really, with smoke filling the ceiling and then the house itself. Fortunate because that smoke was all that happened. Could easily have resulted in the loss of the home. We go to any number of false alarms at buildings with

Woolston Brass members play big role in international success CHRISTCHURCH musicians feature prominently in the National Brass Band of New Zealand, which was named runner-up in the brass band section of the World Music Contest. A third of the band members are from Christchurch, with all but one playing for Woolston Brass. The contest is held every four years in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The New Zealand band’s programme opened with Whakarangatiratanga, commissioned from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. The programme also featured a new major work written for the band by renowned English composer Peter Graham. The 39th Parallel is based on the landscape and mythology of the Wanganui region in memory of brass band

The Christchurch School of Music is a family-oriented community aimed at providing quality music education in and around Christchurch. LEArning firST aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen.

They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. THE sensational Celine Toner returns to the Hornby WMC this Saturday. Last at the club in April performing ‘Full Circle’ with her sisters, Celine’s next show features her daughter Samantha and long time guitarist Ian ‘e Doctor’ Jeffries. Born in Glasgow, Scotland into a musical family, it was inevitable that Celine would follow the same path. As a teenager, her family emigrated to NZ and there began a wonderful and ful lling musical career. At 13 she was winning talent quests and Country Music Awards all around the country and it wasn’t long before she was venturing internationally with performances across the globe. She has graced such stages as e Grand Ole Opry, e Melbourne Concert Hall, e Sydney Opera House, e Bob Hope Centre in the US and the Chinese National eatre in Beijing. She has toured Australia twice with e Royal Scots Dragoon Guards as well as Tours of New Zealand and the USA. Celine has worked with NZ superstars such as Jodi Vaughan, Brendan Dugan, Patsy Rigger, Suzanne Prentcie, Gray Bartlett,
